The Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI) course introduces candidates to the foundations of instructional skills by focusing on the theoretical knowledge that supports learning and teaching. This course guides the knowledge and skills needed to become an AWSi, by focusing on teaching methods, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety supervision and feedback. Candidats are also provided with the opportunity to demonstrate and be evaluated on their understanding of skills and knowledge, through a practical teaching experience and a small series of hands-on tasks. Upon successful completion, candidates are certified as an Assistant Water Safety Instructors. The AWSI course does not certify candidates to instructor Swim programs, but is a mandatory pre-requisite for the instructors course.
