Race/Fitness Training (Scroll down for individual level information)
This course is designed to enhance and develop the strength and endurance of your swim strokes. Through training in stroke improvement, proper mechanics, entries and speed enhancing techniques, this course will provide a thorough improvement in your swimming. It should be noted that the course is an adapted version of the Life Saving Society’s Bronze, Silver and Gold Fitness awards. It includes many of the same requirements, and adds a further dimension, the Platinum award. The course is constantly evolving, but has its roots in a program designed by Bryan Herskovits in 1997. All coaches undergo special training sessions to make sure that only the highest quality of instruction is provided.

Once Aqua Quest 12 has been completed, there is often a gap before students proceed to the Bronze levels. While there is no longer an age requirement for the Bronze levels (providing students pass all three levels), we continue to find that most students are still not quite mature enough (mentally, physically or both), to excel in these upper levels. The Fitness and Race Training course is designed to help students improve their aquatic abilities, build their confidence and maturity as they prepare to acquire the life saving skills of the Bronze levels as well as offer continuity. It is also a great level to participate in between Bronze Cross and Leaders as there is usually a one year gap between these levels. The course is designed to be fun, but is quite demanding.

It is often asked whether a student should enrol in the Patrol program (Rookie, Ranger, Star) or the Fitness and Race Training program. Both programs are unique and beneficial. If students prefer an intense swim session, with focus on improving the mechanics of their strokes, and development of strength and endurance, the Fitness and Race Training program is ideal. If however, students tend to look for a more relaxed atmosphere with a greater emphasis on Rescue Breathing and First Aid Techniques, the Patrol program is right for them. Both programs are excellent lead-ins to the Bronze levels. The Fitness and Race Training program really helps students improve their strength and endurance and stroke mechanics which are key to the Bronze levels, there is also some focus on rescue techniques. The Patrol program focuses primarily on First Aid, with little emphasis on improving stroke mechanics, strength and endurance. Of course it is possible to take part in both programs, please inquire for more details.
